STATE DATA BOOK 2014

NOW AVAILABLE ON DBEDT WEBSITE

HONOLULU — The Department of Business, Economic Development and Tourism (DBEDT) today released the 2014 edition of the State of Hawaii Data Book. The Data Book is available on the DBEDT website at https://dbedt.hawaii.gov/economic/databook/ and may be downloaded in whole or in part as either PDF or Excel files.

The State’s Data Book is the most comprehensive statistical book about Hawaii in a single compilation. With more than 800 data tables, it covers a broad range of statistical information in areas such as population, education, labor, energy, business enterprises, government, tourism and transportation.

“For people who want to do business in Hawaii or just want to know Hawaii, the Data Book is the first source of information we would recommend people to look at,” said DBEDT Director Luis Salaveria.  “It has a wealth of information collected from numerous public and private sources on all aspects of our state.  The Data Book is the most popular publication on the DBEDT website.”

Some of the interesting data in this newest edition show that:

• As of July 1, 2014, the military and their dependents, which totaled over 110,000 people, comprised about 8 percent of Hawaii’s population. (Table 1.03)

• Bankruptcy filings decreased from 3,862 in 2010 to 1,805 in 2014, a 53 percent drop over the 4-year period. (Table 4.15)

• In 2014, Hawaii had a population of 706,890 registered voters with 63.6 percent of all persons of voting age registered.  Of all voters, registered, males accounted for 337,293 compared to 369,597 registered female voters. (Table 8.01 and 8.08)

• Regional price level in Hawaii was 16.2 percent higher than the national average in 2013.  Rents were 58.7 percent higher, while goods and other services were 8.3 percent and 2.8 percent, respectively, higher than the national average. (Table 14.02)

• The 2013 average annual (nine month school year) cost of child care was $8,936 for a school-aged child in a child care center and $7,449 in family care.  This compares to the 2012 average of $8,904 and $7,446, an increase of 0.4 percent and 0.04 percent, respectively. (Table 14.14)
• There were 254 people aged between 95 and 99 that had an active Hawaii State driver’s license in 2014, a 15 percent increase from the 2013 figure of 221.  (Table 18.16)

• In 2014, annual vehicle miles traveled per vehicle achieved its lowest figure since 1992 at 8,409 miles traveled per vehicle. (Table 18.17)

• Over the last twenty years Oahu Transit Services (The Bus) has served about 70 million passengers per year on average. (Table 18.25)

• There were 1,591 condominium associations registered with the State in 2014, representing 151,320 apartment units. (Table 21.10)

• The Honolulu downtown area vacancy rate for competitive office space was 14.5 percent in 2014, an increase from 2013 when the vacancy rate was 13.7 percent.  (Table 21.24)

• In 2012, the sales from 4,643 retail establishments with payroll in Hawaii totaled $18.9 billion, with $13.0 billion coming from Oahu.  The total sales of 9,512 retail establishments without payroll was $430 million for the year. (Table 23.02 and 23.03)

• Of the $451.8 million in foreign agricultural exports in 2013, $51.8 million were animal products and the remainder, $400 million, or 87 percent, were plant products. (Table 24.11)
