*Definition of CDPs and Census Tract

Census Designated Places (CDPs) are concentrations of population identified by the U.S. Census Bureau for statistical purposes. The boundaries usually are defined in cooperation with local officials and have no legal status. CDP boundaries are generally updated prior to each decennial census, may change from one decennial census to the next with changes in the settlement pattern. There are no population size requirements for CDPs. There are 151 CDPs in the state of Hawaii; Honolulu County (53), Hawaii County (44), Kauai County (24), Maui County (30).

Census Tracts are small, relatively permanent statistical subdivisions of a county that are updated by local participants prior to each decennial census. The primary purpose of census tracts is to provide a stable set of geographic units for the presentation of statistical data. Census tracts generally have a population size between 1,200 and 8,000 people, with an optimum size of 4,000 people. Census tracts cover all land area in the state. The spatial size of census tracts varies widely depending on the density of settlement. There are 350 census tracts in the state of Hawaii; Honolulu County (243), Hawaii County (50), Kauai County (17), Maui County (40).
